Peeyush Ranjan, chief technology officer of Flipkart resigns
Peeyush Ranjan, chief technology officer of Flipkart will leave the company at the end of December as per media reports. This is another big exit of top managers of India’s largest e-retailer.
Ranjan will be joining the San Francisco-based accommodation startup Airbnb as its VP of engineering in January next year.
A former Google executive Ranjan joined Flipkart in May 2015 as Engineering head, and was elevated to the position of CTO in June this year.
On his decision to move to the United States Ranjan commented,
‘After being elevated to group CTO, unforeseen things (personal family matters) made me move to the United States which eventually made me to find a suitable opportunity there. Also I would be reporting to Binny Bansal, Flipkart chief executive officer till December 31, 2016”.
During his tenure at Flipkart, Ranjan spearheaded several technological advancements including opening the biggest data centers in India, pioneering progressive web app technology, and most importantly scaling up the company’s infrastructure.
Ranjan’s most recent key initiative- Flipkart Labs in Palo Alto which focuses on deep computer vision and natural language processing will now be led by Ravi Garikipati, who is the company’s head of engineering.
Before joining Flipkart, Ranjan was leading Google’s engineering group for its Android One project, which was aimed at creating lower-cost phones for emerging markets like India. He was the second key hire from Silicon Valley for Flipkart after it had roped in Punit Soni who was a senior product management executive for Google and Motorola and eventually exited Flipkart in April.
There has been a series of top-level exits at Flipkart earlier this year including Punit Soni, chief product officer, who left in April; Ankit Nagori , chief business officer and Mukesh Bansal , commerce head, left in February; Sanjay Baweja, chief financial officer left in October and in July the company’s legal head Rajinder Sharma had also quit the firm.
